Tobias Renouf and the Weight of Being the Other Generational One
There is a particular cruelty in being the second-best of your kind in the same league as the first.
Long read

Tobias Renouf is twenty-four, a midfielder of genuinely rare completeness, and he has spent three seasons being described, accurately and unhelpfully, as 'the one who isn't Vasque.' This is the summer that framing is supposed to end. Wellsford have built a team that finally matches his level, and handed him the responsibility to prove the comparison was always the wrong comparison. The talent was never in doubt. What's being tested now is whether a player can carry a club, rather than merely decorate one.
